Changing Rooms: Episode 4

Transformation 1 – Sarah and Lynn

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen took Sarah and Lynn on a trip to the Bahamas in episode 4. Putting his own twist on the boho style, Laurence went super luxe, but with intricate detailing – very glamourous décor and very Changing Rooms!

He used lots of greens and browns, whilst introducing pops of pink and blue through the furnishings and décor. What stood out in this makeover was Laurence’s paint effects, he used a wood grain effect, stencils and Rum and Coke effect.

Scroll down for top tips on these techniques.

Nutmeg White
Saddle Brown
Bay Horse
Spiced Honey

Transformation 2 – Tom and Richard

Jordan and Russell took Tom and Richard back to the future in this transformation. 2LG Studio were inspired by the retro furniture already in the room, such as vintage mirrors and a Chesterfield sofa.

They also added a lovely personal touch with a gallery wall featuring quirky vinyl records prints.

Special Guest: The show’s host, Anna Richardson

Our special guest this episode is the amazing Anna Richardson, the host of Changing Rooms. We sat her down for a chat about her new (and favourite) job. Here’s what Anna told us…

“I was so excited when I heard it was coming back. And when I got the call to say, ‘would you be interested?’ I mean, they didn't even get to the end of the sentence before it was, of course, I would love to do that”.

She also shared that the show has been a learning experience.

“I'm a creative person. Yet that hasn't really evolved or been realised in my life. But there's always the chance to learn something on Changing Rooms”.

Anna went on to describe her high points from filming the show.

“It’s very, very exciting being around people who are able to take a space and turn it into something extraordinary! Somebody like Tibby, who can create something extraordinary out of wood, or the painters who are able to see colour with Laurence and the boys”.

We also asked Anna what it’s really like working with Laurence and 2LG, as well as her decorating plans for her new flat.

Dr Dulux: Decorating techniques from the show

In this part of our special podcast series, Dr Dulux explains how you can recreate the painting techniques from the show in your own home.

Transformation 1: How do you create the rum and coke effect?

First things first, what we mean by the rum and coke effect or broken cut effect, is when you create visual texture on a surface, so it appears more interesting.

In Laurence’s design, this effect provided a beautiful backdrop to the incredible stencil wall panels. You want to paint little patches of colour, spray it with water to make it softer and then blending it together. It’s as if you’re creating a smoky effect or colour wash on the wall.

Laurence also uses his own stencils in the show to craft one-of-a-kind designs. If you want to have a go at stenciling, you can pick up extraordinary wall stencils at the Stencil Library – it’s where Dr Dulux gets hers!

Check out Dulux how to videos for more expert tips, including simple ways to upcycle a chest of drawers.

Transformation 2: How to be confident when choosing a bold colour?

Testers, testers, testers. That’s Dr Dulux’s top tip when you’re deciding on a bold colour. And it’s how Jordan and Russell chose between Brass Buckle and Peanut Butter before choosing the final shade.

Dulux Roller Testers let you sample different shades on your walls and with your décor before you commit to a colour scheme. It saves you time, money and a lot of hassle!

Watch this video on how to use Dulux Roller Testers and find the right shade.
