Inside a Colour Designer's Cosy Cotswolds Barn Conversion

Dulux's Rebecca Williamson talks home inspiration, wood-burning stoves and dream buys.

Fancy a nose around our Senior Colour and Design Manager Rebecca's home? Well, you're in luck. Here's a peek at her beautiful Cotswolds home…

What does ‘home’ mean to you?

'Being myself and enjoying time with my family and friends in an environment that feels happy, comfortable and laid back.'

Sum up your interiors style…

'I don’t have a style as such; I like to create a space that reflects personality with pops of colour and fun objects which reflect our story. I don’t like things to feel too matchy-matchy or neat – I like the mood to feel relaxed.'

Tell us about your home…

'We live in a converted barn in the Cotswolds. It has a renovated modern interior which still has some elements of the original features like high rafters and beams which makes it feel really homely. We've only been here for a few months since but have begun to put our own stamp on the place.'

'It’s a rental, but we are lucky enough to be able to paint here and there, so I've updated the alcoves with a lick of hearty Copper Blush. I’ve also been busy creating an art wall with all our favourite pieces and painting furniture, such as our kitchen storage ladder to add character and make efficient use of the space. My favourite project so far has been us building the bar for the garden to overlook the incredible valley view – this is our most loved part of the house, it’s quite a contrast having not had a garden in London for the last eight years!'

Which room do you spend the most time in at home?

'Beyond the garden, I love our living space especially when it’s cold enough to light a fire in the wood burner, there’s nothing cosier and more serene.'

Most treasured item at home?

'My 1920s raspberry coloured champagne glasses which were a thoughtful wedding present and brushed gold mid-century drinks trolley.'

Do you have a design hero?

'It’s got to be Danish brand, Hay. They create effortlessly cool interior products which pack a colour punch. I love the simplicity of their products but also how they transform an everyday object into something to far more considered and precious.'

What’s the best decorating advice you’ve been given?

'When you find your perfect colour and you plan you using it across a large surface area always go a tone lighter as it will look like the original hue you liked once its reflected around the room.'

What’s your biggest decorating 'DO'?

'Do use a tester, it’s so important in helping you decide on the right colour for your space as colour is impacted so heavily by light and the substrate you’re applying it to. You can easily get Dulux testers online to make that final decision a little quicker.'

What’s your advice to people wishing to introduce more colour into their homes?

'I always advise that when you move into a new place, start by painting the space white or off-white to begin with and then introduce colour gradually as you begin to get a feel for how you use the different spaces, how the light changes and which rooms you spend the most time in especially at certain times of the day. If you’re not happy with your colour selection, you can paint again for free with the Dulux Let’s Colour Guarantee.

What’s the best way to choose a colour to suit you and your home?

'I often think that a good starting point is to consider the colours you tend to wear in a fashion sense as chances are you are already very comfortable surrounding yourself in these hues on a daily basis. Also consider how you want the room to feel and what is the primary function for example if it’s a bathroom which you want to help wake you up in the morning and perhaps do your makeup or have a shave then having something light and airy is important. You can then test your favourite shade using the free Dulux Visualizer app which uses augmented reality to see how colours look in real time on your walls.'
