As crisp as a sunny autumnal morning, this scheme has all the winning elements to make your home a little brighter. It may be autumn, but orange has year-round appeal if you get it right.

Warm and vibrant, this shade can’t fail to pep up your living spaces and add joy to the everyday. Bright, but not as scary as red, orange is an evocative and powerful hue – it says ‘welcome’, rather than 'enter if you dare'. It's more versatile than you might think, too. Read on for our top tips on how to make it work at home – go on, add a little spice.

1. Orange is a versatile hue. It works with an array of shades, from deep grey to turquoise – and of course, not forgetting chocolate brown (that classic Seventies combo). Try Auburn Falls 4 (above, top left) or Ginger Glow (above, bottom left) with a smokey Distant Violet or Teal Facade (above, bottom right) – or both – for a rich, dramatic and throughly modern living space.

2. Pair orange with graphic, pop-prints on upholstery and curtains, such as Scion's Taimi fabric (above, top left) for a retro-inspired twist. Cheerful and upbeat, this look would also be well-suited to kids' rooms. For a more grown-up vibe, Orla Kiely's Scribble wallpaper (above, bottom centre) adds texture and a graphic edge in a more subtle way.

3. A warm and welcoming shade, orange is a natural partner for wood – from furniture to cabinetry and timber cladding. Try a feature wall in Ella Doran's Wood Gain Blue wallpaper (above, top right) for a bright take on traditional timber.

4. For a softer approach to orange, team with honeyed neutrals and natural fabrics – rush flooring, wicker baskets and textured linens will add depth and a cosy vibe to your space. Ikea's Lenda cotton fabric (above, bottom right) is a good basic for starters.
