Q: Hi Dr Dulux, we're in the process of selling our home but the outside of our property isn't looking its best – what can we do to make it look more appealing to buyers? Any tips on what colours we should go for? Harriet, Wembley

A: Harriet, I'm glad you asked – exteriors always get neglected, but in fact, if you're selling your home, it's even more important to make sure the outside is in tip-top condition, as a new study by Weathershield has found that adding a lick of paint to the exterior of your home can increase the perceived value of your home by up to 23%.

A tired-looking exterior is one of my bugbears, but I'm not the only one. Weathershield's study found that a front door in need of paint was our pet hate when it comes to the outside of our homes (followed closely by crumbling masonry and cracked walls).

So, if you only do one thing to smarten up your home on the outside, I'd recommend you give your front door and window sills a fresh coat of paint.

And as for the colour – normally, I'd say go wild and pick whatever colour takes your fancy, but if you're looking to sell, go for a crowd-pleasing shade (you don't want to scare off potential buyers, right?). Weathershield found that white or cream was the best way to instantly boost kerb appeal ( a huge 46% of people preferred white or cream), followed by pale blue (19% - see Frosted Lake, above), then yellow, mint green, followed by lilac, red, navy blue and grey, so take your pick!

If you're playing it neutral, check out Cream Tea - especially good for cottages or countryside homes. Or, you could try on-trend Gallant Grey, my colour of choice for urban homes and Victorian terraces.

You'll be so pleased with the results, you might reconsider moving home after all…
