Amanda’s Colour Story: A Changing Rooms Special

On the third episode of Changing Rooms, design duo Russell and Jordan from 2LG Studio injected warm, cosy colour and a fresh layout to Amanda’s living room. “There’s nothing I miss about my old room,” she says, delighted by her new, tranquil “haven”. Watch our video to get a full tour of Russell and Jordan’s clever design and to hear what Amanda – and more importantly, her grandson and her cats! – made of the makeover.

The colour palette

Drenching the walls and ceiling with a single coat of Simply Refresh Natural Hessian makes the room glow, and Russell and Jordan also cleverly carved out a little reading nook with Brave Ground paint in the corner of the space. The colour combination “makes things look a little bit warmer, a little bit more homely,” agrees Amanda, but her favourite décor moment belongs to Iced Gem, a pink stripe that the boys added as a flourish and that also appears in their hand-drawn, feline-themed artwork .

The paint technique

The designated reading corner feels like a warm hug thanks to the earthy shade of Brave Ground on the wall – and you can recreate the look at home with our tutorial. It’s a brilliant technique that you can apply to any multi-function room, whether you want to create a dining area or a gorgeous WFH station.

The Changing Rooms effect

Working with the Changing Rooms designers changed Amanda’s outlook on colour. Her revamped lounge has given her “loads of confidence,” she says. “I’m a different person now!” She plans to use the same shades of Iced Gem and Natural Hessian to give her hallway a refresh next. As for Cookie’s favourite part of the room? It’s a draw between the bespoke shelving staircase built by carpenter Tibby Singh and the pink chair in the reading corner that he’s claimed as his own.
