When it comes to decorating large surfaces it is best to use a quality roller. You can get many different sizes and differing pile lengths - short, medium or long. The best way to choose the roller you need is to consider that a short pile is for very fine or flat surfaces.

A medium pile can be used on a slightly textured surface, such as artex, or can be used on a flat wall.
A long pile roller can be used for highly textured surfaces such as brickwork.
The rollers themselves come in two varieties, either ready built or cage. The sleeves can be pushed very easily onto the rollers.
It is always a good idea to wash the rollers in warm soapy water first so that you do not end up with fluff from the roller being left on the wall.
If you have awkward places to reach it is a good idea to get a radiator roller which will reach behind radiators to achieve a very good finish.
