Understand how lighting affects your room

The lighting in your room can have a really profound effect on your mood and the overall effect of your décor. Rooms with north facing windows never receive direct sunlight. For these rooms it is important to choose a colour that contains no black and will brighten your space. To find these colours look to the fresh area of the Dulux Tailor Made Colour display, or use these colours from our main range.

For paints that work even harder to try to maximise the amount of light in your room, try our Light & Space range. These colours reflect twice as much light around your room compared with our conventional emulsion paints using clever 'LumiTec' technology which makes them ideal for making smaller rooms seem larger.

Rooms with south facing windows have the opposite problem of almost too much light. The sunlight that streams into these rooms for the greater part of the day can sometimes be too glaring and hard on your eyes. To make the most of this beautiful light but keep it under control use colours from the calm section of the Dulux Tailor Made Colour display. These shades contain quite a lot of grey which will absorb a little of the light and soften the effect on your room. From our main paints range I would suggest these colours.

For rooms with east or west facing windows the light still needs to be maximised, as when the sun is off the house, either in the morning or in the afternoon, the room may feel a little dreary. For these spaces I would recommend these colours from our main colour range or the warm colours from the Dulux Tailor Made Colour display. These are cosy and relaxing, and sympathetic to any space.
