Uploading a photo

In order to get the best results for your project, we would recommend that you follow this simple guide in order to take and upload a picture successfully.

The website has been designed to work with photographs in a landscape format (i.e. wider than they are tall) and they should be saved as JPGs of between 0.5 and 2 MB. This means that photos taken from most digital cameras should be fine, and most mobile phone cameras of 2 megapixels or more should work well too, but make sure you set them for a large picture size.

Taking a good photo

When taking the photo try and use as wide an angle as you can so that you get as much of the walls in the photo as possible - try standing in the doorway. Tidy the room to remove clutter that's hard to paint around - plants are particularly tricky.

Try and take your photo in good daylight, but if you have to use the flash then make sure it doesn't cause reflections or make the picture look washed out.

If you've got a large window then don't worry if it looks too bright in your photo, concentrate on getting the lighting right in the room. Turn on the main lighting in the room, but turn off lamps and uplighters if you can to avoid excessive shadows. Check your white balance and lighting settings (choose daylight, shade or tungsten settings as appropriate) so you don't get a strange colour cast.

But if in doubt then just point the camera, click and have a go anyway, or you can use one of our preselected rooms!
