Blue is calming, reassuring and is becoming increasingly popular within modern interiors. Often associated with air and water it can create a soothing and relaxing space.
When we think of colours associated with wealth, we generally think of Gold, purple or red rather than blue. However, in the Middle Ages, the Lapis lazuli blue pigment had a higher value than gold.
Contemporary Blues have an aquatic quality inspired by deep oceans, shimmering streams and sparkling minerals. A calming colour that has ethereal qualities. The mood it creates makes it perfect for more personal spaces where tranquillity is desired, allowing clarity of thought and relaxation.
In the home, blue can create serene and tranquil areas by using softer shades. Brighter ultramarines can revitalise and refresh a room by providing energy without overpowering the space.
The blue palette is more influenced by green and reflects inspiration from both technological shades and natural tones.
The colours seen from an aerial view of the ocean and rain forests have really inspired these new blues with both brighter hues and more subtle tones included.
The range of beautiful teals and turquoises are creative colours which have a high fashion appeal.
Smokey and shadowy shades add an airy sense of definition especially when combined with sophisticated neutrals both warm and cool.
The ethereal quality expressed through fragile, more subtle shades create a luminescent appearance.
Deep ultramarine blues like Teal Tension work really well with lighter greyed off tones like Blue Reflection. There has been a strong move towards these green based blues that offer sophistication and opulence. In this open plan space, these colours help to break up the room whilst creating a relaxing tonal scheme.

Denim blues like Celestial Cloud 2 are complimented by soft colours such as pale pinks and muted greys. The light pink will really brighten up darker spaces whilst creating an interesting contrast against the blue. To soften this combination further and bring it right up to date use a light grey such as illusion on your shelving or cupboards.
Here we have chosen soft textiles like these cushions and rug to go with the relaxing style of this open plan living space. Warm cream furnishings and sophisticated pink and blue accessories will really enhance these beautiful wall colours.
